Courses about nonprofits in graduate schools of law, management, and public administration have multiplied in recent years, as have programs directed to understanding philanthropy and civil society. The authors of this text designed it to be suitable for use in these multiple settings, by combining tightly edited social science, management and public policy readings with news accounts and traditional legal materials and methods. Enterprise alternatives, gifts, advocacy, fiduciary duties, tax treatment, immunities, fundraising, foundations, membership, accounting and other matters are explored in terms of the potential legal consequences facing decision makers in different settings. Readings are organized into hour-by-hour chapters and are not excessive in length.
